How To Care For & Maintain Solid Surface Kitchen Countertops

Solid surface countertops are a great addition to any kitchen. Given their adaptability, durability, and low porosity, solid surfaces are easily cleaned and restored, demanding minor maintenance compared to alternative materials.

Solid surface’s extremely low porosity keeps bacteria away. Therefore, they do not require excessive cleaning and preservation; however, the surface can become damaged over time if ill-treated. Below we have created tips that aim to help you maintain your countertops.

Maintaining Solid Surface Countertops

Scratches - To prevent countertops from damage, we recommend using a chopping board during food preparation. This will prevent any unwanted scratches from appearing on your surface.

Heat Marks & Scorching - Never put hot pans directly onto your solid surface countertop; such heat can damage any surface. Instead, use a heat protection pad when placing hot pans onto your worktops, or alternatively leave cookware to fully cool first.

Chemical Spillage - Accidental spills of strong chemicals such as paint stripper or oven cleaner should be immediately rinsed away with soapy water to steer clear from damaging your countertop. A non-acetone based remover and water can be used to treat nail varnish spills. However, undetected or prolonged exposure to chemicals may result in your surface becoming damaged.

How to Clean Solid Surface Countertops

Everyday spills and dirt can be effortlessly cleaned away with a damp sponge followed by being dried with a soft cloth, which helps prevent spotting. Although liquids cannot penetrate solid surfaces, it is best to wipe them up as they occur.

For basic household stains, repeat the above steps using a non-abrasive cleaner and microfiber cloth. Gently scrub the stained area in small circular motions and wipe dry with a cloth. A film layer can build up on solid surface countertops if the water is left to dry on the surface without being wiped up. This film will dull the surface and make the finish appear blotchy and uneven. Therefore, to prevent a film build-up, you must remember to wipe your countertops completely dry immediately to avoid unwanted damage.
